Regulations regarding live animals transportation can be found in the "IATA Live Animals Regulations". Furthermore, specific regulations of the different countries involved must be met - country of origin, transit and destination-, as well as those set by the airlines involved in the transportation.

Shipper's Responsibilities:

Prior to the acceptance of a shipment, the shipper must:
  • Verify that there are no embargos affecting the animal(s) to be transported.
  • Obtain all documentation and correct information for the shipper's certification.
  • Compliance with national carriers and IATA regulations, providing stalls and containers that meet the live animals IATA regulations requirements.
  • Affix special feeding and watering instructions to the stalls or containers and to attach a copy of the documents that accompany the animal(s).
  • If the shipment is to be transferred at some point of its journey, this must be previously coordinated with the corresponding entities in order to avoid delays and arrive at destination in the shortest possible time.
  • Declare the condition of the animal when is pregnant.

Reservations:

It is a requirement that space for live animals must be requested and confirmed for the entire journey up to its final destination.

Routing shall be made using the most direct route possible in order to minimize the number of stops, therefore reducing strong climatic changes that might affect the health of the animals.



The reservation must contain the following information:
  • Air Waybill
  • Total number of animals comprising the shipment
  • Weight and dimensions of the animal(s)
  • Name of the animal species and number of specimens per specie
  • Airport of origin
  • Airport of transfer
  • Airport of destination
  • Flight number, date
  • Name and telephone number for the consignee
  • Attention and facilities required by the animal(s), both en-route as well as at destination

Animal Attendants
Animal attendants will be allowed on board providing that it has been previously coordinated with the airline and that the following conditions are met::

  • Animal attendants must be provided by the shipper, and demonstrate sufficient experience and skills including tranquilizing and euthanasia in cases of emergency- in the handling process of the animals to be transported.

  • The attendants must have the corresponding visas for the countries of destination and transit, as required.

  • Some charges might apply.
